Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
Tony, they actually called the British equivalent of that show 'How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?'
Today I watched 12 episodes of House seaosn 4, all of them shit, and listened to a load of musics:
Humbug by The Arctic Monkeys is fucking amazing, anyone who was a passive fan before is gonna be switched off of this, but anyone who likes Jesus and Mary Chain/My Bloody Valentine stuff is gonna get right onto this. I think its a great direction for the band to go in parallel with their witty lyrics, to use a film analogy its like having Martin Scorsese direct Secrets & Lies. Awesome album and I hope everyone checks it out.
After hearing that record I was inspired to listen to Psychocandy and Loveless again, and was pleasantly surprised to discover that I enjoyed both of them. Psychocandy felt very much of its time, and I could not engage with it in the sense that I at no point tapped my feat or head banged if you know what I mean, but the music and words did conjure up some very strong images. Loveless I was not so keen on, but I still found much merit in it, and I heard a lot of influence by The Stone Roses debut in it, I dont know if I was suypposed to but a lot of moments sounded specifically like the song Don't Stop.
This is probably the wrong thread for that paragraph but fuck it, its what I've been nerdy over today.

I think that was the name of the show here in Canada too.
Not sure about MBV being directly influenced by the Roses. I would think it's a common ancestor kind of deal since all those Brit bands of the time were really borrowing pretty heavily from the original 60s psyche bands.

To keep in the zone of the last few posts , the nerdiest thing I've done today is listen to Ugly kid joe's America's least wanted. A pretty dire but irresistible metal tape. I did this after having read Hume's Dialogues on religion. Not sure of the potential health hazards that unfortunate combination entails. It sure is a variegated diet.

I wasn't saying that it was a direct influence in that they ripped it off, just that (if my music history is correct) Stone Roses was a pretty big album, it wopuld have influenced a lot of albums at the time like Up The Bracket or OK Computer have influenced a lot of Indie today.

Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
You're probably right to some degree. I can't imagine Kevin Shields didn't own a copy. I just meant Stone Roses weren't being entirely original in their approach so it would be fair to say they're both influenced by House of Love or Primal Scream.
Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
See you say that Primal Scream was influenced by Stone Roses, but I always saw Primal Scream as being to The Rolling Stones what The Stone Roses were to The Beatles. Thats not to say that there aren't aspects of both bands in the music of both, that would be foolish, just that Stone Roses are very melodic, wheras Primal Scream are fucking funky, songs like Rocks and Loaded do sound a lot like certain tracks from specifically The Stones Exile on Main St.
(I'm a bit useless at music stuff, I know what I like but from a technical aspect i'm not very good at explaining myself so don't kill me for sounding like a fool )

Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
I think the Roses were more Byrds influenced than Beatles. As were Primal Scream in their early days. But ultimately, none of this really matters. Other than being the nerdiest thing we've done today.
Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
I created a mix-tape ( a physical one) out of various 70/80s bands including : Thin Lizzy, Blue Oyster Cult ,the Cult, Cream, Grateful dead, Clash , Rush ,Iron Maiden, The Who and the Ramones. As you can probably infer from that list it rocks my socks off. I got inspired by 'Freaks and geeks ' to seek out some good old music that I may have been neglecting for some reason. There's a lot of fun to be had in the process of compiling a tape. Yes , I can smash together a playlist on my mp3 player, but it simply isn't the same thing. Think of it as a window into the past.

It was an awesome way to kill an afternoon when I was a teenager in the 80s!

I'm in the midst of watching Freak and Geeks. I'm on episode 10.
Also, to you music nerds. Please take your music talk to the music thread. It's a freakin' hurdle for some people. Sheesh!

Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
I spent 35 minutes looking for a good US-based proxy that would allow me to access CBS.com so I could watch Twin Peaks, TOS and The Twilight Zone. I found one.
I got really pissed that people outside the US weren't getting full episodes of TOS streaming online for free, so I made a list of places you can watch TOS online without region restrictions.
I also stayed up till 7am. Fuck knows why.
Oh, and I started a podcast with two imaginary friends.

Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
During a joking conversation last night, I said a comment that prompted my beloved to respond with, "I'm not Jeri Ryan and you are not a congressman." And I got a little nerd tingle of joy that she understood my nerd innuendo
Resistance may not be futile after all...

I do believe that would be far beyond her nerd tolerance boundaries, regardless of her slow and grudging acceptance that she's with someone so assimilated to geekery

I read a whole pile of articles on the "controversial" IKEA font change.

Are there really that many people in the world who's lives are so free of worries that this can possibly matter? Must be nice.

But the only good thing about IKEA was the typography!
Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
My friends were reciting Harry Potter spells at lunch today. I felt pretty left out.
