Nerdiest thing , let me think for a second here.... I read Hume , and had an over-ripened banana.
That is a sad bunch of colleagues you've got there Greg!

Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
Today I explained in great detail to a twelve year old boy precisely why I wasn't a fan of several war films that he said he liked, along with Blood Diamond and then I went onto explain why I was not a fan of the works of Jim Jarmusch, and why I am opposed to the ideas behind Dogme filmmaking. This kid clearly didn't know what I was blathering about, and I was going onto other things for no reason other than to intellectualy masturbate because its my only chance (the internet is smarter than me ). As soon as I had finished I realised what a cunt I'd been so I curled up into one of those defensive nerd-balls. Listening to Radiohead and playing Solitaire.
There was other nerdy stuff, I usually have at least one story per day, but I've been lazy and rejected this forum a bit recently. Hopefully me and my friend here can go back to being active!

In what way are you opposed to "the ideas" behind Dogme? The execution in many cases, sure, I could see that. But the concept is gold.

I'm quite sure I now have a new nerdiest thing I've done today.
Buying Star Trek Eggo Waffles ... yeah, I've done that.

I read a book while listening to an audiobook, in sync.

I like the idea of it as a way to give directors more freedom, it is quite strange that putting down rules should actually give a filmmaker more room to breathe, but it is not completely nonsensical. Disallowing over the top situations and exaggerated violence is an interesting way to make one step back and reanalyse the emotional truthfulness and character that should be present in any character driven piece. I also like the idea of shooting on location, once again it makes the story seem more real.
However, if we look at the rules I dislike before going onto my problem with the concept of Dogme, the pros are far outweighed. I find the rule about props to be pointless. The rule states that if a prop is not at the location of the scene which is being shot then either the prop goes or if the prop is essential then the scene must be cut. I really cannot get my head around this. Surely the artists vision must not be compromised, if a scene needs to be in a film then it needs to be in a film, regardless of these restrictions. The only thing that should really come between an artist and their idea is technology.
As most people know, I am quite interested in the photography of motion pictures. In fact, I can often let a film off of being dull or filled with pretension if there are nice shots. Oddly, I couldn't really give a fuck about stills photography. I can appreciate it, I can even enjoy some of it, but there is something about having a moment captured in its entirety that I love. While a photograph can do this (the shot from the Vietnam War of the child running from her napalmed village comes to mind-sorry that I can't remember what its called.), I think that moving pictures can create more of a sense of scale and actually enter ones mind. Its like a projection of oneself onto a cinema screen. There is a barrier, you are looking through a bubble at the mind of the director, but it is still a beautiful thing to behold.
I do not think that Dogme films can ever pull this off. The best photography in a Dogme piece in my opinion comes from one which is not actually a Dogme film, and that is Open Hearts. I feel that the handheld actually distracts, and reminds that one is watching a film. Perhaps this is due to all of the films being shot with a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is always distracting, as it feels too obviously 'realistic'. If that wasn't bad enough, the films are all shot on video, which looks absolutely horrid. Some of the directors whom I admire most, such as Bella Tarr and Krzysztof Kieślowski, have said that they choose to shoot in back and white over colour because it takes away a gloss, it allows the director to concentrate on the clarity of the film itself rather than sorting out lighting and other 'trivialities' and a similar thing could be said about video. In fact I am sure that this is the reason that Von Trier put that rule into the list. But that does not stop it from looking ugly.
There were some other points I wanted to bring up but I think I would probably just be covering old ground. I think what I'm trying to say if I look past the convoluted mess that is the last two hundred or so words, my point is that Dogme is an interesting idea. It is a good experiment, that fails. Or maybe it does not fail, it just doesn't fit with what my ideas on film include. I know that when I make films, giving myself rules only leads to disaster.

I can't believe that you would force a 12 year old boy to help you masturbate, intellectually or otherwise. At least you had the decency to feel bad afterward. You sick, sick man.
Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
I began to get worried that my non imaginary friends are now joining twitter. Its the clash of the titans. And they still mock me for checking it on my phone.
Also, I confessed to a friend that when I'm walking in a group to any place. If I get bored, I imagine that each of us is a horse and that there is a race horse commentator in my mind calling out who is in first, second, etc. My horse name was "Big Boy Jonny". My friend Cormac was called "Mac The Knife". My friend Joe was called "Jumpin' Joe". My friend Ste was called "Smoke me a Kipper" because his last name is Rimmer. And my friend John was called "Secret Scone" because his nickname is actually Scone because his father just starting calling him it as a child cos it rhymed with his name. And yes, it does rhyme with his name.

Research to prepare for a Sunday School class I'm leading tomorrow. Topic - what it means if the common cliche "love the sinner but hate the sin" isn't in the Bible at all?
It's not, explicitly, but many people think it is. (Similar to the American canard: God helps those who help themselves. Not in the Bible, and clearly not remotely "biblical" in philosophy either.)
But what does it mean to believers that a commonly accepted saying like this is non-Biblical or extra-Biblical?
Should be interesting. The pastor's family often meets with this class, too, so that should bring even more perspective.

"Hate the game, not the playa" is still in the Bible, right?

Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
Well I came up with an idea for a story set in the Star Wars universe today. Because Fictionshed is owned by a pair of imaginary friends, I set about writing the plot and now intend to write a full AudioDrama script for them to produce. I haven't written any form of fiction since I was about 10. However, this plot storyline just flowed out of me......I couldn't stop!!
My geekary gene has gone into overdrive this past 12 months!! I have started to "socialise" via the internet. I now co-host a regular podcast....and now I'm writing fan fic!! WTF happened to me!!!

I'd love to say it comes right after the verse that says, "Cash Rules Everything Around Me," but there ain't no future in that frontin'!Jakob wrote:

RE: What's the nerdiest thing you've done today??
I told Mandi this story on fbook and she said it was the nerdiest thing I've done all day, so I figured I should post it. And I am kinda excited that I get to post something on this thread. I don't do a lot of nerdy things on a daily basis cause I work a lot, and neither of my jobs are nerdy.
I went to Safeway last night and was looking on this 'community corner' bulletin board, and I saw an ad for a VW DIESEL and with a girlish squeal i was like, " VIN DIESEL!?!?!!.... oh wait.." then laughed about how excited i got over thinking it said Vin Diesel <3 . hehehe..
In reality it's way more embarrasing then it is nerdy
