I'm not entirely sure, actually. I got that from a guy I saw on Carson Daly's show talking about a book he wrote on the history of nerds and geeks. They got around to talking about celebrities who have nerdy images. Carson threw some names out and the guy would say whether the person was fake or not. All I remember is him saying Pharrell is a fake nerd. They were also talking about how a lot of nerdy things have become cool, even among those who don't consider themselves nerds, which the nerdy celebrity thing was part of.

Gotcha. The old "geek chic" thing that comes around every six years or so. Revenge of the Nerds spawned a few unexpected fashion photospreads back in tha day.

The differences between Star Wars fans and Star Trek fans. When I was young, Trek was always "geeky" and Wars was always "cool". The line seems very blurred now. In fact, this new Trek movie coupled with all the Clone Wars and Prequels might even reverse the old view. Wars is seeming more nerdy and Trek could well wave goodbye to its exclusive Nerd-appeal.

I think that is exactly what is going to happen with the new Trek. As I expound in the last episode most, if not all, the characters on Trek have been huge nerds. To some extent, at least. Even Sisko, who's as close to a properly "cool" guy character on Trek, is a huge baseball nerd. I really think Trek has appealed to a certain fanbase for years because it always had characters that fanbase could identify with. Nerd Idols one and all. The new film's cast is geared to appeal to, as Mandi would say, "coolie-woolies" or "normals." The characters are hip, cool, conventionally good-looking and, from what I've seen in the trailers, without a trace of nerdiness in them.

I haven't read through the whole thread so this could've come up already , probably it has. In the vain of Preview/Reviews. How about a Nerd Hurdles episode on Nerd Hurdles ? No offense , but listening to Nerd/Geek podcasts could well be a hurdle for some people.

I think we'll probably do something like that for a milestone show. #50 maybe?

Just a heads-up: A girl nerd I know is coming over this week to record a parody episode of Nerd Hurdles with me. We're going to steal your theme music and everything. So thanks for this thread, because we needed a topic.

So a dork steeple chase then Weathereye? How about a l33t long jump?


Other ideas: your thoughts on anime, Song of Ice and Fire series, nerdy T.V. series and stereotyping of nerd life, space travel: the ultimate nerdy achievement?, nerdy foods: more than just mountain dew and cheetos.

How about pointless hobbies as a topic. I was listeneing to the Admiral guesting on HGN with Boz and they spoke about train spotters and Eddie Stobart vehicle name spotters. I also got thinking about people who collect memorabilia. Could easily make a full episode that covers peoples obsessions with "pointless" tasks. Don't get me wrong, I can see the appeal of collecting memorabilia, but some just take ie too far!.......Or do they?

Okay, okay, that was a stupid statement! I get it

TIME TRAVEL...

This seems to be a Hurdle for some people when it comes to movies or TV programs. Not a lot of people I know, women in general, like the idea of time travel as a main plot for a film/movie.

(I have to say it) Lost ended up dropping viewers once the time travel started. The writers held off the story of TT for a season because they thought the general public at large would have problems following the story.

Just a thought

I certainly have things to say about time travel. I will save these comments for this episode. Or a future Star Trek episode where I go on a rant about time travel.

Unless you’ve already had an astounding podcast rant about time travel that didn’t end well, and future-you came back to the past and tricked Mandi into stopping you , thereby altering which of the infinite possible worlds is now the actual world within this parallel universe…

Haha, more like subtitled films. I'd also throw in the aversion to the widescreen format that many people have.

Comics, sometimes referred to as graphic novels.

Reading comics on a computer seems to be even more of a hurdle for people. I don't see why.
