Which vampire vexing vixen do you prefer?
Buffy or Bella?
So, I was just leafing through a Vanity Fair and there was an article on Twilight, that indirectly credited Buffy the Vampire Slayer for beginning the teen target vampire phenomenon. It got me thinking, is this progress? So I thought I'd ask.
Also, why do they both have such awful names?

Re: Buffy or Bella?
I couldn't get past 25 pages of Twilight. I swallowed the first season of Buffy in two days.
Buffy has a sense of humour. She's also a character who could exist in the real world.

Re: Buffy or Bella?
The article that I'm reading just said that Twilight has "gay crossover appeal" as a result of Edward being a "beautiful boy at the peak of his slender translucence." Bah ha!! Awesome.
Yeah, Buffy is funny and awesome, and Bella is an awful little wiener. I certainly weep for my students who want to be Bella. Maybe i'll start showing a little Buffy in class, to try to save them from the pit of despair that Twilight is for the teen soul.

I don't know who Bella is, so I voted for Buffy.(although Bella would have to be pretty awesome to beat Buffy anyway)

Re: Buffy or Bella?
This article is a blast.
"Everything a girl could want in one dreamy envelope, Edward is the answer to a princess's prayers - doting, fiercely protective, carrying his beloved great distances in his arms like a groom forever crossing the honeymoon threshold. In the novels it gets monotonous having Bella sigh over how breathtaking Edward is every time he materializes, subjecting the reader to dumb-bunny clunkers such as this beaut: "Edward stood in the halo of the porch light, looking like a male model in an advertisement for raincoats."" -James Wolcott

Show them the episode where Buffy fights the soulless Fembot trying to reclaim the love of her creator. Here's Buffy, a strong, funny, independent lead. And here's Bella, a vapid, love struck, unaware, husk of a person. Watch what happens kiddies, look Bella gets turned off and it's sad. You sure you want to be like that? A plaything to be thrown away and forgotten? Stop crying.

I'm thinking that you should come in a be a guest speaker. That is almost EXACTLY my style of teaching. For example, when I teach math, and the students forget to add units, it goes something like this:Ultact wrote:Show them the episode where Buffy fights the soulless Fembot trying to reclaim the love of her creator. Me: If you add 2 cm to 3 cm what do you get?
Student: 5
Me: 5 what? 5 kittens in a well?
Student: 5 *sob* centimeters *sob*.
I am a bad lady.
Re: Buffy or Bella?
You did that to your students. I did that to my classmates. All of whom are older than me (I skipped a year in primary school).Mandi wrote:I'm thinking that you should come in a be a guest speaker. Ooh! Ooh! Show Season 2 Episode 3, "School Hard": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0533480/. But maybe it would be wise to show episodes 1 and 2 (the pilot), episode 7 ("Angel") and episode 12 (the season finale) to set up the characters and stuff.Mandi wrote:Maybe i'll start showing a little Buffy in class, to try to save them from the pit of despair that Twilight is for the teen soul.
Re: Buffy or Bella?
I've never seen either of them. Can I vote Xena?

Re: Buffy or Bella?
Seeing as how it's 7 - 0 , you can guess I voted for Buffy. For all of the reasons you've discussed here.
Kumar, you skipped a grade? That doesn't surprise me in the least! Good for you, keep kicking cerebral ass, my friend.
Mandi, that quote about Edward's translucence was amazing, thanks for that!

It's not as great as it's made out to be.Tony wrote:

Re: Buffy or Bella?
I skipped the first year of primary school though, which is really a bit of a pointless year.

Xena is pretty damn hot and awesome, I don't think anyone could really beat her in a poll. lol
Unless maybe vampire Willow.

Re: Buffy or Bella?
Oh dear. I'm right now reading Twilight. It was sitting at the library check-in desk, so I decided that I wanted to see exactly what was so great about this series. Plus, I figured that since I really enjoyed the HP series, it wasn't too strange to try out another "young person" book.Mandi wrote:This article is a blast.

I'm 100 pages in and it's just shit on a soggy cracker. I can't relate to Bella at all. Even when I was that age, I still wouldn't have related to her. She's just making me angry in so many different ways And that quote up there is what I have to look forward to? Ugh.
I'm going back to the Xena poll.
Re: Buffy or Bella?
Reading the Twilight books is like reading a Mary Sue style fanfic, only you don't already know the names of the other characters. It's super lame, and I think it sends an awful message to the girls who read it. That being said, I read them all. My excuse is that I'm a fast reader so it wasn't much of a time commitment.
Re: Buffy or Bella?
Okay, so I finished Twilight and I was five different shades of angry, which I have already gone into on my blog. What a stupid story
I'm not going to read anymore of the stories, but I went to Wikipedia to find out if it ended the way I assumed. Was Wikipedia correct in saying that
I'm just angry.

- Spoiler:
- Bella gets pregnant after having sex with Edward while she is still human? Uh, WTF? Really? Because I thought that vampires were the undead...that they didn't breathe, they didn't have a heartbeat, they didn't have their own blood...but they still make sperm? Really? And wow! Vampires can procreate just through sex? Then why do they bite victims to turn them into vampires?
I'm just angry.
Re: Buffy or Bella?
Okay... here are the key bs elements that Meyer uses to justify that:
- Spoiler:
- Meyer says that becoming a vampire means that you stay frozen how you are. Unchanging. A lady vampire couldn't get pregnant because her body would have to change. A manpire hasn't changed (except that he has because he doesn't breathe and his blood doesn't circulate and he sparkles, among other things, but we'll just ignore that for now) so he can still make a baby with his still supposedly fine 200 year old sperm. Forget all of that... Bella's baby pretty much eats its way out of her. That part was excellent. Except that Bella didn't die.

Re: Buffy or Bella?
I thought you might. She's Mormon, she had to squeeze baby making in there somehow. So it's not her fault?
Re: Buffy or Bella?
But she's also given other writers (i.e. me) free reign to do whatever the fuck we want with vampires. So I thank her for that. She repealed the Rice Laws.
