Oh, if only you could see the face that I just made Laughing

I just don't get it. She chooses to write a vampire story, but she ignores one of the major tenets of vampirism: They bite people to "procreate." And she ignores the fact that they're basically well-preserved corpses.

Okay, I have to stop talking about this now...people in the workroom are starting to notice my ever more vehement typing Laughing

I think you are a far more capable keeper of vampires than Meyer ever will be.

I knew they sparkled before I read the book, but by the time I finally got to the actual sparkling, I was so angry with what I'd just read that I thought I was going to have to quit reading any further.

SPARKLING? What, are they grape juice? The more I think about it, the more I agree with Mandi's analysis that this was just really lame Mormon Mary Sue fanfic. So what does it say about our society that millions upon millions of dollars have been thrown to this woman for writing the equivalent of a

Mormon-inspired story about vampire abstinence until marriage before procreation with 100-year-old sperm?

I can certainly think of lots of things that say worse stuff about our society, and I've been thinking about it here, but I can't figure out what the Twilight craze says about our society. It doesn't say anything good though, that's for sure.

Agreed, there are far worse things that tweens/teens could be doing with their time, and I should know better than to begrudge someone who wants to read...but this type of story at such an impressionable age? I just think it's sending the dead wrong message to so many girls. Don't depend on others to save you when you wander into the bad part of town; instead, pay attention to where you're going and think before you go. That's the message that Meyer should have been sending with Bella...not be a bubble head and stroll through life without looking because your sexy undead boyfriend will be there to save you because he smelled where you were.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this. Am I?

No, I think that about sums up the general consensus. The reason I think this hasn't been jumped on more by the media is Bella is the pendulum swinging in the other direction from the Britneys and Paris Hiltons. Tween girls have been subjected to so many skanky role models lately that I think society has kind of been thankful for the abstinence message and ignoring the patriarchal message.

In the second book
Spoiler:
Edward leaves Bella (for her own good/safety) and goes to Europe (backpacking?). Anyway, Bella reacts by curling up in the woods. Then she spends the summer doing progressively more reckless things, because when she's almost killing herself she hears Edward's voice in her head. She jumps off a cliff, drives a dirtbike too fast, among other things. What effing message is that sending? If your boyfriend leaves you, trying to kill yourself is the best way to cope?

Yeah, I was in the middle of posting a positive comment about Bella based on what Jakob just wrote...but now. Really? WTF!!! Mad

This is one of my major complaints about today's society: We have to be one extreme or the other. We can never successfully strike a happy balance between Bella and Britney.

Oh man, that latest spoiler from Mandi makes me even angrier than I was over Twilight Evil or Very Mad

Still zero votes for Bella.

I haven't read Twilight, and I don't know if I ever will.

As far as the stupid names go, my understanding was that her name was supposed to help reinforce her status as a blonde, vapid, cheerleader type thrust into the role of hero. And that it the title itself is a juxtaposition - someone named Buffy is unlikely to be a slayer of anything.

I still feel sorry for Buffy for having a name like Buffy, juxtaposition or otherwise. I was a big fan of the movie too! Luke Perry!!! Bah ha!

I feel guilty for even making this poll. Did I already say that? I still feel guilty. Poor Bella.

Oh, also on the topic of stupid names
Spoiler:
Edward and Bella name their creepy little devil baby Renesme, which is a combination of the names of Bella's mom and Edward's "mom". STUPIDEST NAME EVER!

And, off the topic of stupid names, welcome to sonofbuzzo!

I loved the original Buffy movie! There was something so wonderful about Pee Wee Herman as a vampire Laughing

And, no, I will not stand for anyone saying "Poor Bella" beyond the obvious of "Poor Bella for being a thoroughly shitty character and not being decent enough to form a patch on Buffy's vampire-slaying ass."

Ro, I just need to say this right now, for all to hear... I am SO excited for your visit. I keep looking at the calendar and saying, "I'm so excited for the Ro weekend!" It would probably be annoying, except I think that Jakob is as excited as I am.

To me there is only one Buffy and that is Kristy Swanson.

Also, is the name Bella supposed to be some kind of tongue in cheek Bele Lugosi reference? Awful.

I hate what Twilight has done with the rules & hobbies of vampires. I can tell you for certain, they definitely don't like to play baseball in the woods and they don't use mousse.
