This is what podcasting is supposed to be. Holy warpcore, Hurdlers, this is epic. I hope Michael and Roxanne show up again; they sound like cool people.

I loved this episode. I echo Weathereye's description. I too would like to see more of Ro and Gab's Canadian doppelgangers.

"License to camp" my new, favourite expression.

Thanks guys. I was pretty happy with our first "location" recording. It was a 3-day editing nightmare though. Laughing We gave Michael and Roxanne a card, maybe they'll join the forum?

Good find on the "spoiler" code, Meks!

Whoa! I didn't see all this other codes under "others" before.

Fun times.

Me thinks I should change my username here to “certain_people”. Wink

One, I only had my digital recorder with me because I was at my nephew’s 6th Grade Orchestra recital prior to seeing Star Trek, which I wasn’t even planning on seeing that night, but the recital got over earlier than I thought it would, so I got there just as the previews started, totally on a whim. The recorder is really a RCA Pearl mp3 player, an older generation, and I can tell you the specs on it are shit, basically. In other words, whatever I might have recorded that Thursday night, May 7th, is good enough to listen to at work while industrial fans and circuit board washers create significant levels of background noise, but this alleged file is nothing I’d even want to share with my NH friends, much less any strangers online, and certainly never, ever, for profit. And yes, Mandi is right, I hope Paramount comes out with a deluxe 4-DVD set for this movie with dozens of DVD bonus features; I will buy it the first day it’s in the stores. I hope it has two or three geeky director and actor commentaries, and I will gladly watch/listen to those.

Regarding Harry Potter curses, I sincerely was originally going to say “Wingardium Leviosa”, but I didn’t know how to spell it (I think I got it wrong just now), and I am such a nerd that I wanted to check the spelling if I was going to type it on this forum! After all, there’s no harm in levitating Jakob, I already look up to him. So, I went with the first curse I could think of that I knew how to spell; unfortunately, an unforgivable curse. Alas, Mandi now thinks I have a DeathMark tattoo on my forearm. I’d make a joke about being Tom Riddle’s long-lost brother, Tony, but I think she’d believe me about that!

Great show, you two. I enjoyed the “Man on the Street” interview stuff. Loved the “uh…no…” reply montage at the beginning! It might be a worthwhile thing to consider using that approach again for other possibly nerdly movie releases in the future.

I think I have had enough public humiliation to last me a long, long time. Just thinking back to trying to interview people makes me a little sick. It's not on the 'cast, but when I tried to talk to the first person I completly forgot the word 'podcast'. It was pretty painful, but totally worth it. If we ever do that again, I am going to employ liquid reinforcement. For sure.

Liquid reinforcement would be ok. A video camera would be even better.

It would be awesome to fly across international borders in the Shuttlecraft Lumina, bringing friends together to see movies, plays, concerts ... and podcamps!

I think that should be "Ro-xanne." Rolling Eyes Very Happy How stoked was I when she said that her favorite TNG character was Dr. Crusher? Right, like I even have to ask that question. This was a great episode and sounds like you had a blast (once you found people who actually wanted to embrace their nerd pride!).

If only I liked Enterprise as the best-Trek, the parallel would be eerie!

I think Roxanne nailed it when she talked about how the cast is so good at playing these charcters like devolved versions of the classic crew. So when we see Spock, for example, missing some of the traits we know and love from Nimoy, it doesn't really matter because Quinto's Spock is still learning and evolving as a person. It's totally believable that Quinto's Spock will become the calmer, more wry, more comfortable in his own skin Spock that Nimoy brought us. The same can be said for the others.

I know, I know ... baby steps. Maybe break the idea in with the Transformers sequel and Terminator 4, so that when the big one rolls around, by which I mean Trek XII, you guys will be so in the groove you won't go anywhere without the camera. I can't wait.

The audio quality of the mobile recording was really good, what sort of gear did you use (assuming that's not a trade secret)?

It's not a trade secret. It's the Zoom H4 Handy Recorder. Which is a 4-track version of the more affordable 2-track H2 Handy Recorder (which I assume provides similar results for field recording and looks less like a tazer).

It's pretty great. Apparently they've just released the H4Next. Which looks like it has some minor improvements. Such as the annoying and ponderous transport toggle is now a standard suite of buttons.

Sweet, I'm feeling covetous.

How far away do you set the thing from you and Mandi when you record NH?

I use two condenser mics run through a mixer lined-out into the H4's line-inputs. The "in the van" session was recorded with the four of us all between one and three feet away, using the built-in mics. I had to use a noise-reducer and a lot of compression on the mastering of that.

Thanks for the info, I've been impressed with the quality of the sound of your show. And, you know, that music stuff you do... afro

I finally got to listen to this today. Awesome show, Mandi and Jakob, and congratulations on not only surviving the random encounter, but also for finding two such groovy folks to chat with. I hope we hear more from them. And I'm glad you enjoyed my little foray into the world of the morning DJ. ;-)

I met a friend of my brother's last winter who had the H4 as well. We played with it a bit and it's definitely something every podcaster/musician should have. It's No. 1. on my list of eventual purchases (If I don't land a steady gig by fall, I'll get the H2).
