Chat Room Hurdle
Tony (Jumpsuit), being insane, made us a chatroom. I'm not sure we 100% need a chatroom, but if it's something you desire, here it is: http://nerdhurdles.homestead.com/chatroom.html
Let me know if this is something we should integrate into the site.

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
I'm here and there about chatrooms. I'll dip into the Simply Syndicated room now and then, but it's not a consuming part of my day. I do find them handy when something is happening, though; a TV show, movie, live podcast, that sort of thing.
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
Now you've found a real hurdle for me. I occasionally go into the SS one, and am relieved when nobodies there. I'll post a couple of "Oh! Nobody here!" comments then disappear. However, on the occasional times I've listened to a live show, I have absolutely no problems with them. Seems to bother me being in a chat room with only one or two other people. If it's like that, I lurk...and then log out. Wierd!!
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
The SS live show chatrooms make sense to me. Otherwise I prefer forums and twitter. Say my piece (or is it peace?), go do my thing, come back and see if anyone's replied. Or chat on IM with a friend who I don't want to spend the long distance charges phoning. But chatrooms... if they're hopping, give me a headache (or I can't follow at all). Also, they seem to be mostly small talk and shout-outs. I don't get them.
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
I'm with Jakob and Kennedy. With the exception of the chat during the live shows I don't really do chat rooms.

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
I went on the SS chatroom when i wasn't listening to a live show for the first time yesterday it was pretty fun. But hen i know most of the people (there were only about five of us) who were there anyway. I don't think i'd go on a chatroom (if it were attached to a forum) without getting to know the community first.

I do enjoy the Simply Syndicated Chatroom, but there never seems to be anyone on when I am. During the holiday I'll probably spend all my life on the chat there, just waiting.

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
Are we sure that this Nerd Hurdles chat room is working? Has anyone used it yet? I've looked in on it a couple of times now, and can't help feeling that there may be about 2 or 3 other users next door!! In a different room..... Does it not work like that then!
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
Just hang around in the chat until someone joins you. I'm in there now if you wanna talk.

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
It's tough to run into someone, what with all living in such wildly different time zones. Or should that make it easier? At any rate there's only about 30 hurdlers on the forum, so it's a slim chance of running into anyone, really.
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
If we each take an hour a day, at least 6 of us will bump into one another then...Bagsy NOT organising this!!
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
I've never once chatted in a chat room.
Seems like this must be a hurdle. May not be one that I can explain rationally -- a repressed hurdle!
There are a few reasons, which (in a repression paradigm) might only be thin justifications.
I tend more to an "at length" approach than works for chatting.
I'm not comfortable with the chaos that it looks like when you read what's written.
Being very anti-flame, it always seemed that flaming was more likely in chat-mode than in forum-mode.
I don't text either, and not just because I don't spk the language.

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
I've often been in the Simply Syndicated chat room and it can be a great way to waste some time when you've got nothing else to do. Its nice that its very friendly and attracts people who write properly. If anyone wants to try the hurdle, I'd recommend there, you'll probably clear it no problem and come away with the gold medal.
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
I'm usually more stubborn than this, but I -- at least initially -- tried this hurdle tonight. As Jon suggested, over at SimplySyndicated, I gave it a shot. Mark (the devil) and (miss) Mindy were on there, so it seemed like a good time to offer direct feedback on their podcast.
Plus, I'm having trouble logging in there as well. It seemed like a good idea to see if Mindy had any moderator tricks or had heard of others with issues moving over.
Don't know how that's going to play out, but it did lead to my first ever chat.
Still feels weird ... reminds me of the movie Jumping Jack Flash in a way.

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
One step further is the Skype calls. We record our podcast via Skype, but the first time Darren actually called me I hesitated before pressing the green button. I still do now. I'm fine once I do, but that first initial motion of actually answering is still a hurdle. Maybe I'll feel differently once we've all actually met.
When I first got Skype, I put a request in the SHaFT chatroom for someone to test it. Aztec obliged, but I was too nervy to actually hold a proper conversation. It was a very awkward moment for me.
The only other Skype conversation I've held was last night with Scot and Elton. This was a request from Scot via Twitter to test thier new Skype recording set-up. I offered to test it with them, but regretted it immediately. However, once I cleared the "green" button hurdle it was fine. We all spoke for a while and I got quite comfortable.....so I must be improving!
Next step, to actuallt take the plunge and speak to Richard and Allison. I always mean to, but never can get as far as putting the call in. Thinking about it, I don't think I've ever actually called out on Skype.

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
Trust me on this, Richard and Allison are the easiest people in the world to talk with. I hate talking on the phone, and would rather email my closest friends rather than pick up the phone, but Richard and Allison make it easy to not notice half an hour's conversation has just flown by. Do it, you won't be sorry.

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
Then it leads onto problem number 2. The wife has gone to bed and if I'm yaking away on the old Skype, I'm liable to awaken with no testicles.....
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
Ori, I understand your hesitation perfectly. I had that same problem the first few times my mouse was over the little green button on Skype.
It gets better though. The other day I had a four-hour Skype conversation with an imaginary friend. It was throughly awesome

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
The three times I've skyed in to SHaFT I was 1) drunk and 2) feverish and, finally, 3) totally not under the influence. I find it easier to talk to strangers when I've had a couple down or my self-censoring doubt-machine is otherwise compromised. What with me being pathologically shy. It's a strange thing calling in to "chat" with people you suddenly realize you don't know at all.

All I can say is; ditto.
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
Chat rooms can be very annoying if they include anything more than a small number of friends. I generally avoid them.
There's also a big redundancy factor, which is something I'm never a fan of.

Re: Chat Room Hurdle
I hate redundancy, and that's what you always get when you're in a chat room, unless it's just a few friends. I visit them rarely.
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
Me thinks the verdict is in on this one, certainly regarding any NH chatrooms...Hey, it's the thought that counts. It's always fun to play with the Homestead software.
Re: Chat Room Hurdle
I spend hours upon hours in the Simpsyn chatroom on a daily basis. It's a sad thing.
Using skype is kind of nerve-wrecking for me , I've only used it twice.
