Project Potter
That's right, squibs. Episode #17 has the first installment of this muggle's journey into the magical land of Potterville. This thread is where you can vent your frustration with me.
Re: Project Potter
I wouldn't really hit you with a Cruciatus Curse, Jakob. And I hope you find something in HP to like, but if you don't, I'm cool with that. A lot of the reason I liked it, indeed with most movies or books or websites I like, is that it created a world that fed my need for belonging, and I'm a sucker for that.
If you feel like complaining, and boiling the story down to it's essence, go ahead and wonder why it took 7 books to get to the point that was obvious from the beginning...Harry has to kill Voldemort. Or give yourself over to it all, and maybe you'll be filled with the same bittersweet mix of fulfillment/melancholy I was when I finally finished book 7. It's actually a little of both.

Re: Project Potter
There are three parts of me that have three different responses.
One wants to crush some skulls and see heads roll.
One accepts that you might not like it.
And the other one really genuinely hopes you love it. It's made such a difference in my life, in a way no other book or film has ever come close to. If was to pick any point in my (admittedly short) life when I truly became who I am now, it would be the second time I read Harry Potter; or the first time I read all the books that were available then back to back (this was when only the first four were out).
Expect a full and emotional response to Episode 17's Project Potter soon.

I know I'll never have the time to set aside to read these books (although I'll get to checking out the other films I haven't seen yet), but to hear you and other passionate fans talk about it I really wish I could've gone for that ride like you all did. I'm actually a little jealous of Kumar and his generation, who've followed this epic adventure like my generation followed Star Wars, or like multiple generations have followed LOTR. Something about being young and free of the weight of the adult world when you experience these things makes them one of the great joys of growing up.
Then again, I've heard plenty of smart adults say how much they love this story too. Maybe I need to hunt out these Stephen Fry read audio books I've heard so highly recommended and finally see what all the fuss is about.

That's the best way to experience them, unless you're obsessive with reading like I am.Bucho wrote:Maybe I need to hunt out these Stephen Fry read audio books I've heard so highly recommended and finally see what all the fuss is about.

Totally agree. The first two books are cutsie/kidde wizardlings at magic school. The series get darker starting with Prisoner of Askaban.

Exactly!
The premise of POA doesn't even sound like a kid's book

Re: Project Potter
True. The first two read very much like kids books. But they gain a whole new level when you've read the whole series. Till then, don't base your opinion on them alone.
Re: Project Potter
Don't worry. I'm going to read them whether I like them or not. If I don't, more comedy value.
Rounda, are you saying she doesn't quit with the ALL CAPS in the later books?! I assumed she did. I will read them all just to find that out.

Re: Project Potter
Seriously? I've never felt that. Ever.
I use all caps A LOT, but people have never complained. Hmm.

INtereSTING ... the use of ranDOM and POINTless capItalIzatIon as a matter of eduCATion?
That's a POTENTially poisoNOUS thought.
I prefer the Arlo Guthrie route, and just letting the emphasis come from punctuation: parenthesis, quotated ... underlined, boldfaced, etc.

So true! How could he have known any of their "reasons"? Imagine how HE would have felt ... slowly being driven into insanity.Roundapanda wrote:Especially not in OOTP... They didn't write! Bastards!
Re: Project Potter
*facepalm*
They had to use the Polyjuice Potion because they thought that Malfoy would only share his secrets with his closest friends (Crabbe and Goyle). Plus, how would you get into the Slytherin common room without the password?

Re: Project Potter
Put on the cloak, follow some Slytheryns around until they go to their common room. Wait until they say the password and either follow in behind them, or use the password at a more convenient time. Then they could just evesdrop on Malfoy and his goons. I think it'd at least be worth a try while they waited months for the potion to be ready.
Re: Project Potter
Crabbe and Goyle are pretty stupid for the first few books. There's no telling whether they'll be talking about who the Heir of Slytherin is. They needed to pose questions.Jakob wrote:Put on the cloak, follow some Slytheryns around until they go to their common room. Re: Project Potter
But in the meantime, in the months of potion brewing, I don't think it'd hurt to try using the cloak. Or at least have the idea even posed, to be shot down in favour of the potion plan. Or be tried and failed so that the much more "who knows if this will work" potion plan needed to be put into effect. Just sayin'.
Re: Project Potter
Maybe it was just 'cause Polyjuice potion is funner to read about than the cloak

Re: Project Potter
They're twelve years old, for crying out loud. Cut them some slack. They came up with a pretty good plan, and did it.Jakob wrote:But in the meantime, in the months of potion brewing, I don't think it'd hurt to try using the cloak. Sigh. I love you, Eliza, but you said "funner". Go stand in the corner for an hour.Roundapanda wrote:Maybe it was just 'cause Polyjuice potion is funner to read about than the cloak
