Topic Suggestions

Post  Domino on Tue Apr 21, 2009 12:03 am

I would like to suggest a couple topics that I would like to hear your opinions on and likeness for.

1) Steampunk
2) The Mummy Trilogy
3) Why exactly did "League of Extraordinary Gentleman" suck so bad?

I like those ideas, particularly Steampunk. That's a perfect example of the Nerd Hurdle concept, right? A genre you think you might want to check out, but you worry it might be really sucky. For instance, I really wanted to like The Difference Engine, but it made me fall asleep at random moments.

I really want to like steampunk but i can't quite pinpoint what the hurdle is for me yet. Alot of it is Hit and Miss. For instance, I like the computer parts they make (don't know what you'd call that) but don't like any of the comic aspects.

And I would really like to know why Van Helsing was awesome and L of EG sucked.

Bob Dylan. I absolutely love his music, but it seems to be a nerd hurdle for some. Might make an interesting topic. Or not.

Hey I'm not bashing Steampunk!! I really like it. I meant that I can't figure out what my hurdle is exactly....I thought maybe you'd discover it.

Bob Dylan...good one. Although I have no hurdles with him.

I think part of the problem with steampunk is it hasn't been successfully executed (Wild Wild West comes to mind). At least, in my experience I haven't found a book or film that really worked. It always seems to have so much potential, but falls into cheesiness at the last moment. Perhaps because it's hard to buy into the Victorian "tech" actually working? Kennedy is right as well, The Difference Engine is one of the greatest literary sedatives ever forumlated. I think this really should be an episode.

Maybe that's also why League f Extraordinary Gentleman was bad and Van Helsing was good. Steampunk done right and bad?

I think Van Helsing was what I was thinking of when I said "hard to buy into the Victorian "tech" actually working." Laughing

I think I liked Hellboy over both. Or maybe... not. Steampunk is always so cartoony. I'd like to see it done straight-up serious.

Godzilla

Post  SHC1970 on Tue Apr 21, 2009 10:50 am

Young JHC (son of SHC) asked whether Godzilla was nerd hurdle for you (in Episode 12 of An Apotheosis of a Bombast.

I would hope it's not, but hey - some people just aren't into watching guys in silly looking rubber monster suits run around and stomp and cheap models of Tokyo.

In all seriousness, I can see how the whole "Godzilla is good no wait in this movie he's bad" / King Kong beats Godzilla in US version but Godzilla beats King Kong in Japanese version / GINO (ugh) - thing could be a major hurdle. Plus the way that the poor dubbing of English over the Japanese films has become a standard comedy bit kind of undermines the credibility of the franchise as legitimate "sci-fi."

Up from the depths
Thirty stories high
Breathing fire
His head in the sky
Godzilla!
Godzilla!
Godzilla!

And Godzookie....

Godzilla!

I agree I liked Hellboy better too but I think it's in a different category since it's based on a comic book...oh wait, isn't LofEG?

Didn't they try to make a straight up steampunk movie about a decade ago? I can't recall the title....Darkdays or something like that? I hated that movie.

If they could make an egyptian steampunk movie I would melt with happiness. Unless, of course, it sucked which it most probably would.

Sorry, never been huge into Godzilla. For no particular reason. Thats a good topic thouggh.

Well it's hard to say. In the sequels for sure. That hot air balloon?? All the way. But they were archeologists so alot of their crap just looks like that anyway.

I bet the inclusion of "The Rock" may be a hurdle for some to enjoy The Mummy trilogy.

I've suggested it before but a episode on podcasting would be a good ep. It would most definitely be wonderfully weird and ironic. As Jakob once said, it is the nerd's medium.

Its one hurdle we've all jumped but the general population, aka the normys, seem to be resisting it.

Hmmm, how meta...or masturbatory. Definitely a worthy challenge. What a Face

It's high up on the list of future episodes. There's a chunk from the Ender's episode dealing with it I chopped out. So I think we need to get it out of our system soon. Also, Anthony from Scuttercast send us a letter about this topic. So it seems to be an in-demand topic.

How about nerds and trivia.

Why we love it so, what we focus on, and why we never seem to realize when we've delved a little too deeply into a given topic.

Or that she's trying desperately to jump over it but not quite making it... (pessimism FTW)

It was closest "hurdling" smiley face I could find. There's GOT to be a hurdling smiley face though don't you think?
