I watched it a few months ago.

It was really funny...and really lame at the same time.

It is funny, because it is DENSE with SW trivia. And it messes with SW trivia like none other (the gay bar is the MANTINA). It is lame becaue it is obvious that they cobbled the plot together out of earwax and toothpicks.

It shows the war of Trekkies vs SW heads. Very well done.

"No one calls Han Solo a bitch!"

Ray Parks makes a cameo.

Seth Rogan plays a double role as a hardcore Trekkie ( I know I am pissing you guys off referring to "trekkies" as "trekkies") and as a Star Wars pimp.

It is must viewing if you think you know the SW universe. It is set before episode 1 when stuff was pure and only mildly fouled by ROTJ.

What else can I say? It was a lot of fun. The more SW fans you can watch it with, the better.

Thanks for the reply! It sounds like I'd definitely get something out of it, as I was a near Jakob-esque SW geek back in the day.

People keep telling me to watch this movie and I don't want to. It looks like Detroit Rock City with nerds. I think Peter has the right idea. If I had a crew of SW fans here, it would probably be fun to crack a few and have a night of it. But to watch on its own, it doesn't look appealing to me.

Hey, maybe I can make it to Toronto in the next year. Let's get Kennedy to come over and we'll have a few and watch this, and then do a NH show....sound like a good idea? I'm serious.

Why is it that that sounded like a normal, non-creepy suggestion until you added "I'm serious."?

Creepy or not, I'm in.

I've watched this and loved it. A "Roadtrip" movie with similar humour to Roadtrip, but absolutely packed full of Star Warts references. You probably know about the directors and the production companies falling out about one of the key plot points. The production company wanted an aspect of the story removing and the directors thought it an integral part of the story. With just a couple of weeks left to edit the final cut, they were told they could add the key point back into it. It was pieced back together hurredly and the final cut suffers slightly from this. In fact, maybe more than slightly. I still recommend it though

Probably a 7/10. But 8/10 for die hard Star Wars fans.

I've seen it. Its good but does fall flat in a couple places. Saying that though, I would SAY its a MUST watch for SW fans. The various cameos are fun and entertaining. The whole cancer plot line should have just been left in cos it doesn't suffer as a movie because of the plot line but for the massive re edits they went through after being told you can't have it, oh changed our minds, yes you can.

Its an amplified 8/10 cos I'm a SW nerd.

I thought the cancer storyline was a bit too much all in all. Felt really forced.

However the final joke was quite good "What if this movie sucks ?"

It's one of the few movies that made me laugh all the way through, and I probably didn't catch a lot of the references. I love me some nerd-on-nerd violence.

I think it suffered through the hurried re-edit to try and put it back in. Many scenes throughout the movie had cancer related dialogue and actions removed that they just didn't have time to re-insert. If you ask me, the movie company "bigwigs" killed this movie, It's still good, but could have been great!!

I just saw the movie this weekend, and though the treatment of the Trek fans made me a bit...uncomfortable...I loved the in-jokes, trivia, props, and especially the cameos. And the cancer storyline didn't seem shoehorned in to me. All in all a fun movie, plus Kristen Bell in a slave Leia outfit FTW! Oh, and a word of spoiler free warning: when the character Windows goes to the gas station bathroom, make sure you are not eating or drinking anything, otherwise you will be removing it from your sinuses momentarily. Cool

The film makers have apologised for the harsh treatment of Trek fans on the ForceCast. Kyle admits that he is a Trek fan and feels guilty for taking his anger out of the Star Trek copyright owners. It all came about from trying to get permission to recreate the Star Trek uniforms and the Kahn-Kirk statue. They thought the difficulty would come from the Lucas camp when making this movie, but were basically given full access at Skywalker ranch to all copyrighted visuals and sound. They were verbally told by the Trek people (paramount?) that it was all okay to go ahead. They had the uniforms and the Statue made and 2 weeks before filming, an e-mail came through saying they could NOT use any Trek copyrighted imagery or sounds. It cost them money at a time when they could ill afford wastage (they even sold the statue and uniforms once filming was done to help pay for the location shooting!) Kyle admitted that in temper, he dilliberately took a swipe at the whole Trek scene. He now regrets it, saying that hitting out at Trek fans the way he did was totally unfair.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. I thought the reason given for the statues not resembling the actors sounded a bit more real. Plus from what I've seen in other shows that sought to satirize Trek I assumed Paramount were major douchebags about it.

He did say that they gave full verbal permission. They kept telling him that there was no problem, go ahead and that the written confirmation was just a formality. That was what got his goat.

I must admit, if I were more invested in Trek, I'd have been offended. 15 years ago, it would have been a different story. Trek would have probably allowed full access and Lucas would have probably said no!! Another example of how things have swung around with the two franchises.

Not necessarily. I may disagree with Lucas's artistic decisions most of the time, but he has always had a good sense of humor about the movies. The Christmas Special, the Ewok crap, and various fan-based things such as Troops and Hardware Wars, not to mention the Lego video games. Paramount have always been dicks about Trek stuff.

I had waited forever to see this thing and was massively let down. It wasn't really funny and felt like it definitely suffered from all the plotline editing. The only thing that did save it was the mass quantities of references & cameos and trying to catch them all. I can see why they didn't push this in the theaters, it could have been a lot better. The end joke was money though, I'll give it that.

Since I said that exact sentence while waiting for The Phantom Menace to start at the midnight Wednesday showing, I thought it was the perfect way to end it without commenting one way or another on the film. However given the Deathstar sized bankroll Lucas made on the prequels, I don't think he really cares what anyone thinks about them.

Re: FANBOYS, The Movie

Post  weathereye on Wed Jul 08, 2009 10:57 am

I ended up seeing this movie the other night. I did so at the urging of the Admiral, although as far as you're concerned, he hasn't done so yet. Time travel is a weird lifestyle.
Anyway, I enjoyed it for what it was: a low-budget indie road movie. It has a couple of nice moments, a few funny moments, and a solid cast. The young actor Chris Marquette, who plays Eli, was the best thing in pap like The Girl Next Door (the porn one, not the horror one) and Just Friends. And whoever that was playing Hutch was a howl. Unfortunately, the Bryan Singer Jimmy Olson was the lead, and he's as bland as the all-natural butter-free saltless organic popcorn I keep finding in my cupboard.
The cameos were solid, too, and this film offers us an excellent rationing of Seth Rogen.

I'd like to see the "middle cut" version of the film, the one that eliminates a key plot point and inserts more Smithian poo jokes, just to compare. All in all, though, I'm glad I saw this, but I probably won't remember much of it a few months from now.
