Should Nerd Hurdles episodes be...
Nerd Hurdles listener feedback poll #1
We're trying to decide how best to please everyone. Some non-listeners have complained an hour is too long to listen to a podcast. But what's the point of kow towing to non-listeners? Still, their beefs might be the same beefs actual listeners have but you're good enough to listen anyway. So here's a poll about episode lengths... unless I can't figure out the poll thing... which is quite possible.

Re: Nerd Hurdles listener feedback poll #1
For me, episodes of any podcast that are between 45 mins and a hour are usually the best. But if you think the material is good enough in the recording, I don't mind listening to an episode that's an hour and a half. I already listen to a podcast that averages out about 2 hours per ep anyway, I don't mind, just as long as the presentation and quality are good enough.
Re: Nerd Hurdles listener feedback poll #1
I voted 1 hour . It entirely depends on the subject matter like Johnnyboy says. I won't be put off by a 2 hour Nerd Hurdles show, neither by a 30 minute one. The direction Nerd Hurdles is going in now is perfect .
Re: Nerd Hurdles listener feedback poll #1
An hour is a good length, however, if it runs short or runs over an hour, thats okay. As long as it isn't stretched out for the sake of it. I listen to the Forcecast which normally runs for 2 or 3 hours. Usually it really drags towards the end, and I find myself fast forwarding sections.
Sometimes, though, 30 minutes doesn't seem long enough

As long as you want to go with them honestly. I have not finished listening to an episode yet saying to myself "What? That's it?" I like hour increments but I'm not timing you either. Just keep up the great work and all is well.

The conversation between Jakob and Mandi should be natural without any attention to time limits. You pick a show topic, introduce it, dance with it, around it, and in some cases ignore it like an ugly wallflower. The main draw for me is your personalities and how they are expressed in your dialogue. I am always left wanting more, no matter the show length. It's not like you are a network tv show and have to come up with exactly 23 or 46 minutes worth of material. Be yourselves. We'll love you for it.
Re: Nerd Hurdles listener feedback poll #1
I think I'd laugh my ass off if you declared that you had to take a break "at the bottom of the hour" and then "bring this thing home on time"!
I don't believe time exists. Do with it as you will.
(And yet I voted ... must be the allure of polls. I put down 45 minutes just to be accommodating. Truth is, a hour works great for me, too.)
I wonder if some non-listeners who feel an hour is too long would also balk at 45 minutes. The average SitCom is 22 minutes plus commercials, but that's one of the many things that is crap about SitComs.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Don't think we weren't listening to you because the new episode is and hour and a quarter long. Most likely future episodes will be 45-55mins long. We don't have control over these things, really.

Sorry I'm late to the party. I usually listen on my way to, or from work, and the drive is almost exactly 45 minutes, give or take a few for traffic. So anything more than that is gravy. Do what feels natural and I'll keep listening no matter the duration.

When it comes to nerdery, the longer the better... I voted for "more than an hour." I also voted "daily," but only in my head.

I would prefer it if you set the limit approaching infinity of the definte integral of the curve (with the limits being the x-intercepts) of the graph of the length of shows against sequence (as a geometric sequence of course, taking the reality of its sum to infinity into consideration) as 1 hour.Mandi wrote:Mean: 1.06 hours
Median: 1 hour

Thanks.

I don't know if you realize this, but being a grade 8 math teacher means that my mathematical knowledge begins and ends at grade 8.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: Nerd Hurdles listener feedback poll #1
I voted for 45 minutes, even though I don't really care. I just think that's usually the best length for most podcasts that don't have a bunch of segments.
Re: Nerd Hurdles listener feedback poll #1
I vote for as long as Jakob and Mandi can keep interested in the topics (and the diversions that they find themselves taking). If you guys can still be having fun talking about something and it's gone two and a half hours already, chances are very good that I'll still be enjoying listening to it.

I wouldn't shoot for a specific time, but go with it til you feel like it's time to end it. I've never heard a Nerd Hurdles yet that I felt went too long. The only time I punch out early is when the Harry Potter update comes in at the end. I feel like a podcast usually shouldn't be more than around an hour though, unless the content calls for it, which I find is rare. It's always best to leave em wanting more. Ending too early is better than going too long, because that's what they remember.
by the way MODE? wow.

Yawn of the Dead was exactly the right length for cutting my lawn. Well done.

You may have noticed someone in the bushes timing you. That was us from past monitoring how long it took you so we'd know how long to make the episode. Time travel has it's uses.
Incidentally, how did the live show go?
