It seems to me that the experience of being a nerd has completely changed in the last 25 years. With the use of the interenet, nerd to nerd communications has changed things immensely. From being a loner, a nerd is now part of a (much safer) group.

Once the richest man in the world is a nerd it kinda changes how people look at nerds. That's before you even factor in Steve Jobs.

Far from being mocked and ridiculed for their interests. I now find myself surrounded by people competing to be the nerdiest. Instead of being mocked for sci-fi viewing/detailed knowledge people are actively trying to outdo one another.

Edit: What are the new 'nerdy' interests? Will it ever be the same to be a nerd or has the interenet quashed the isolation? As a love of computing has become so widespread and everyone has one will this become less nerdy?

I certainly have noticed a trend of cooly-woolies claiming they're nerdy only because they spend a lot of time on Facebook or have a LastFm station. They're merely nerd wannabes. I can't decide if this is a healthy mainstreaming of nerdiness or an underhanded cultural appropriation.

I'd say it's the latter. The real nerds know who they are.

If you've ever been beaten up by three hockey players because you brought a book to school even though it wasn't on the homework list ... you're a nerd.

Underhanded cultural appropriation, FTW. I would even posit that having a Facebook page detracts points from your nerd score card simply because everyone is on Facebook (minus those of us who are keeping it nerd real Wink ). True nerdiness can never be mainstream. I mean, even when Trek was more acceptable during the halcyon TNG era, it still wasn't cool. It was just tolerated like Uncle Mert's pipe smoke at the family Christmas get-together.
