Re: Project Potter
You are right really, I should savour the boxset, as I only have 13 disks left. I'll draft my comment now, rewrite it tomorrow morning, then record it in the afternoon. Now I've written that I have no excuse for a low quality review.

Re: Project Potter
I'm going to sit this one out. Saw the movie last night, really liked it. Commented on it a bit in my latest Fatal Interview show. Liked that the characters/actors are older now...the first half of the movie was very funny, but not in a little kid/cute way, more of a "oh yeah, i've been there" sort of humor.
I found myself at times screaming inside "that's not how it is in the book!", so that sort of ruined it (the end) a bit, but it's too early on, I shan't spoil anything just yet.
I, and my friend Jess, both gave it an 8 out of 10.

Just recorded 5 minutes of myself talking aboot the film. I may have sworn one too many times and I definitely ummed and errrrred too much. I'll try and turn it into an MP3, but if not I'll send it over as a WAV. Hope its of a decent enough quality to be on the show!

Re: Project Potter
BTW, the actor playing the douche vampire in "Twilight" (can't even think of the character's name) is Robert Pattinson. This I know because of my deep love of the Potterverse, and Robert played poor Cedric Diggory.
"Harry, bring my body back!"
Although I must say, as far as I am concerned, playing Cedric was the height of his career, because now all I see captioned beneath his ubiquitous photos are references to his hair style, or similar WTF?-necessities of Celebrity Culture.
I wonder what he had for lunch today? Is he on Twitter?* OMG, he's so cute!

Re: Project Potter
Dude's name is Edward. I think everyone forgot he was Cedric. Also Twilight is more popular now.
Re: Project Potter
I was very underwhelmed by "Twilight" the movie. I have no desire to read the books. I'll take HP any day.
(post-edit)
You come up with some theme music/podcast segment intro, we all find someone here who freekin' loves Twilight to rap/skype with me, and I'll rip off your schtick (again) for a "Project Twilight" for my FI podcast....just a thought...I need something to force me to read (I spend way too much time on my computer).
Although I am working on, finally, finishing my first novel...

Yeah he was pretty good as Cedric. Which is why I never believed he was an 'Edward'. I mean the books were awesome, but its Cedric Diggory! I couldn't get over it.

Re: Project Potter
Is there some sort of conspiracy going on? ...
Fine. Fine. I'll read Twilight, okay? Just the first one.

RE:PROJECT POTTER
You know what I was wondering... why do they make the Deatheaters seem so much more powerful than the OOTP? I mean, I feel that in the books their skills come across as fairly equal.. although the Deatheaters are way more interested in doing unforgivable curses. But in the movie, when they attack at the Weasleys, you see the Deatheaters swoop down in this fast, streak of black to wreak their havoc. And of course, Harry chases after them. Alone. So while you have these dark wizards who can appear anywhere they want with the flick of a wand, you also have these good wizards who actually have to physically run through the field looking for him like any one of us would have to. But why? They have wands. In OOTP they came shooting through the air in big streaks of light (obviously to contrast the black). And when they were fighting it seemed more equal, especially with Malfoy and Sirius (but then we all know what happened next.) Anyways that is what annoyed me about the movie. They just seem so wimpy. I am sure they probably do it to overemphasize the power of the Deatheaters.
I was also disappointed that Harry and Ginny didn't have a bigger kiss in the end. lol

Re: Project Potter
It makes them better baddies if they're actually bad-ass. In the books I always kind of wondered why the Order was having such a hard time dealing with them. Since they seemed a bit like Keystone Cops. I think their black smoke missile flying/aparating was purely due to to "Hey look at this black smoke effect we can do! Let's use it in the pensieve as well!"
Re: Project Potter
In the books, they were pretty evenly matched until full-blown open confrontation began. Then they infiltrated the ministry, recruited the help of the giants and dementors, etc.
In the movies, you don't have time for that. So they're just badass to begin with.
Works for me.

Re: Project Potter
Can someone, perhaps Kumar-The 21st Century Man of Knowledge, please answer, even in a geek/fiction way, something that does bug me about HP? Why is it that Harry can't tell when someone is speaking Parsaltounge to him? There are several times throughout the series he hears voices, and has no clue it's in Parsaltounge until after the fact. It happens in Chamber of Secrets. It happens in Deathly Hallows when Bathilda Bagshot leads him upstairs (Nagini inside of her), and Harry just thinks he's helping/following some old lady.
I know a bit of German, Spanish and Bosnian. I know when I'm speaking it, and when it's being spoken to me. So, what's up with that?!?!

Re: Project Potter
Sometimes I speak French without realizing it, usually if I've just heard/overheard someone speaking French. I often read French without realizing it, usually ingredients or instructions. I don't notice it's French until I get to a hard word.
Re: Project Potter
Harry never actually learnt Parseltongue (I would imagine if it would be difficult to learn, what with it being intended for a different species and all). He was born with the ability to speak it. To him, it is a basal form of communication, as much as if not more than English is.Tony wrote:Can someone, perhaps Kumar-The 21st Century Man of Knowledge, please answer, even in a geek/fiction way, something that does bug me about HP? Let me know if that makes sense or not. Last time someone asked me this question, it took quite a while to refine my answer satisfactorily enough to be an adequate response.
Re: Project Potter
Thanks Kumar, your answer does make sense to me. However, even if it was in instinctual thing he was born with...but wasn't this ability transfered to him from Voldemort when HP repelled the killing curse the night his parents died?...you'd think it would be something he was conscious of using. Perhaps for humans to be parsaltounges, it is a magical ability, and somewhere within that magic is the ability to use Parsaltounge instinctually without conscious awareness. As if wizards and witches are not allowed to participate in trans-species communication with conscious awareness. Hmmm, interesting. I find myself giving this more thought than I ever had!
The "Geek of the Day" behavior beats yesterday, when I said to a customer at the bakery, "Your sorceror's ways will not work on me, Lord Vader!" He laughed, I think he was trying to talk me into giving him a free cookie.

I took 5 years of German in school. Indeed, I got to the point where I could think in German, and that's what I realized is a key element to becoming fluent in a language, the ability to think in that language and instinctually know what you are saying to yourself.
So maybe this all isn't as outrageous as I thought it was....?
Re: Project Potter
Yes, silly of me for using the word "born". The thing is that it is not a language like any other. It's a whole different means of communication that is an intrinsic ability in the person gifted with it. And it makes me happy that you're putting thought into the minor details of Harry Potter, because that is one of the main things that make the series so awesome; there is so much depth to every little bit of the story. You can discuss the minutia of Harry Potter for eons, and it doesn't get technical or boring.Tony wrote:Thanks Kumar, your answer does make sense to me.
