#15 Nerd Pride

Episode 15 Tasks:

1. Come out as a nerd to someone you don't think realizes this about you.
2. Admit that your level of interest in your interests is nerdy even if your interest is not nerdy (i.e., music, fashion).
3. Reclaim "nerd." It's not an insult. When meeting a fellow nerd on the street say, "Yo, nerrrrrd" and give them the Vulcan salute.

4. Create a nerd pride with you as the alpha.
5. Mate with the alpha female. (Or the omega male.)

I only wanted to know so that i wouldn't make a fool of myself using it improperly in a sentence. I'm sorry my post conveyed some sense of me mocking the word.

I outed my love for Star Trek to a colleague. Turns out he's a fan. Apparently there's a Trek movie marathon this week. He asked his partner what he'd have to do to get her to watch one. She said, "Massage my back for the entire movie." Steep. Yay, I made a nerd friend. Actually, we were already kinda friends, but I didn't know that about his Trek love.

Tasks 1 and 2 complete. Friend was a very minor fan of ST. Likes to watch a bit here and there, but not religiously. Shame. My search goes on.

I half-fulfilled Task 1. An ex-coworker who I think knew I was nerdy was given the nerdhurdles.com url. Task 2, I completed years ago. Around the time I was alphabetising my 1,500 records; sub-organized by genre and radius. I'll probably fail Task 3.

You've probably got the best chance of doing task 3. I mean, you have Kennedy only a few miles away. He will get the reference and not look at you like you're certifiable. The rest of us don't have that luxury.

We should orchestrate an "impromptu" street meeting.

Virtually everyone I know already knows my ST, SW, HP and many other Nerd-doms that I regularly hurdle. I am known as a geek by everyone. Asking them to sit down and watch some ST has failed many times in the past and I don't expect any more success if I try again! If I meet a fellow nerd I will give them the salute. The problem is I don't have any real friends that are nerds. The closest to that is my sister. I'll try next time she's home. I sense a disowning coming though.

Should I feel pride or shame over the fact that there is no one to whom I can out myself as a nerd? It'd be as anti-climactic as me walking up to someone and saying, "Yeah, you know I have red hair." Really?!

God, I'm a dork.

All the people I like know I'm a nerd... what do I do?

Approach strangers............actually, thats probably not safe....ignore me!!
