Re: What's Your Hurdle?
I don't hate MACs, but I hate MAC culture. I can understand why people 10+ years ago were wooed by them. MACs were, out of the box, more powerful and better suited to graphic, audio and video editing. But PCs narrowed the field quickly and the only people who didn't notice were MAC users. DVDs look better on Mandi's MAC than my PC.

Thats it! I wanna start a Mac haters club! It didn't bother me before now, but this thread has stirred up something inside!!
Also, why can I not use exclamation marks properly. I've been noticing for a while now that I overuse it....by a lot!!

Re: What's Your Hurdle?
I'll agree that lots of commentaries are BOOOORING. I was really disappointed with the commentary on Boogie Nights (one of my favourite movies) because it was just the director interviewing the different actors in the movie and it kept cutting between interviews, none of which had anything to do with any specific point in the movie.ToxicDeath wrote:Finally figured out what my nerd hurdle is...
DVD extras and Commentaries, sometimes you think the idea of them is good however i never watch the extras and have never watched a movie with the commentary on.
So is this my hurdle?
However, the commentaries for animated shows (particularly Futurama) are mostly AMAZING. I've seen every episode of Futurama with commentary at least five times.
Today I have discovered a new hurdle of mine: STEAMPUNK. I just do not understand. My roommate wants to add brass tubing and shit to his television and that does not compute with me.
Re: What's Your Hurdle?
This may be hard to believe, but there was a time when I was afraid of the World Wide Web.
I used to have a real hurdle over the Internet. For years, I used the Net solely as a place to gather information, as well as for e-mailing. It wasn't until about three years ago that I tried MySpace (which was stupid), then Facebook (which I used daily). And then it was into forums, chats, podcasting, blogging, etc. That barrier that I had for so many years just melted away.
A big part of it is the people. So here's a link to the latest episode of my show, Weather Station 3, which features great friends -- real and imaginary -- talking about this very issue. There is mention of Nerd Hurdlers, too.

Re: What's Your Hurdle?
As a staunch Mac user, can I say that I agree with you.
I love Macs, there's always been a Mac in my family's house, and Windows has only really had a look in when Macs were being useless and I wanted to play PC games. So for me it's really been about the what I'm used to and it's just how I like my computers to work.
And I'll admit to being banging on about Macs at times, but it grates my goat these days when other Mac users bang on about how great Macs are, irrespective of the context. Why pick an argument? I don't want to be judged on the sort of computer I use, because one day someone will truly out do Macs and then they'll be another group being all snooty about Mac users
Apple doesn't help things with they're stupid 'Made on Mac' banners and the 'I'm a Mac, I'm a PC' adverts.
We should all just be one huge happy hippy computer commune.

If Cohnee's running a commune, there's gonna be plenty of cider.

Last weeks ScutterCast should please then. Nerd Hurdles was my podcast of the week choice! (must apologise for the use of the word "N*R*LE" though. Recorded before this forum was launched and I didn't know of your "*URD**" loathing!!)
Re: What's Your Hurdle?
As do I. Actually mine is broader, reaching to pretty much all UK sci-fi comedy. But I still enjoy a Scuttercast. The only podcast I listen to about something I haven't hurdled.
Re: What's Your Hurdle?
There is a rather embarrassing story on this weeks (should be out tonight sometime) Involves me walking through woodland at night dressed in a rubber diving suit......a long story about this weekend just passed.....I've been groomed!!

If we lived in the same continent I lend you the box set
It's Sci Fi Comedy at it's most wondersome!

Re: What's Your Hurdle?
In highschool I lived on Red Dwarf and Hitchhikers Guide. Then, I don't know when, entirely lost the ability to find either amusing. Discworld audiobooks, on the otherhand, I can't get enough of. Which doesn't make sense.
Re: What's Your Hurdle?
Although many would recommend you avoid series 7 and 8...although I personally think they're alright.
Rob Grants "Strangerers" was funny too. I've only got the VHS I recorded from the TV. Don't think it ever got an official release. Hyperdrive is an okay comedy Sci-fi....not as good as Dwarf, though. And of course, theres always the BBC's production of HitchHikers...though I don't recommend watching this in one sitting. Works better with rest periods....
Think you've found my true geekdom!!

Don't you find the pacing slightly off? I personally love them but find some sections to be very long winded.

Red Dwarf takes a few go's to get on to, but once you're on to it, you'll never go back.
Asfor not finding Hitchhikes funny... *Frowns and drinks from Hitchhikers guide Mug*
By the way, I'm a fan of the books and the new film (I know, *Cowers from stick beatings*) But I've never seen the old TV series, worth a try?

If you enjoyed the film ( ) you'll love the series. Only thing is, it tends to drag if you try and do the lot in one sitting. Best to watch a couple of episodes a night and spread it out.

I don't understand it either
I'll probably give The old hitchhikers a go then
I've been meaning to re read the book for a while

The new film gets a lot of stick, but it's really quite good. Its not as good as the books/radio series, but its not as smart a humour. I still think its a bit of fun, and I must say, Zooooooooooey Deschanel is one of the most jaw droppingly gorgeous women I have ever seen. Yeah, I'll defend that film till the day I die.
