Ukeleles are cool! Watch this live video:

Here's the "official" version of the same song:

The CD is very good. The Barnkickers!

GAB wrote:I never really decided whether to play the Weather Station 3 podcast on Imaginary Friends for the co-worker who traveled to Washington D.C. with me -- and met Ro Karen! -- until today.
The episode doesn't land on my Zune as a podcast; it's lumped in with the "songs" menu -- along with 7,787 other songs. This afternoon at the office, shuffled landed on the podcast and I decided that was a sign to let her hear a splendid podcast about a splendid day.
Her reaction? Well, much like mine, absolutely flattered (not in the negative since, but in the completely charming sense).
Hey, that's cool, GAB. Sorry about the right-channel failure; I was experimenting with new software and it was a hurdle. But I'm glad it's reaching new ears. Thanks!

You smooth talker, flattery will get you everywhere! Thanks. Actually, that was quite the day, the first time I'd seen The Church. Talk about fan boy nerdery--A friend and I showed up at First Avenue in Minneapolis in the afternoon, and we were able to hang with the band for a whole hour and watch/listen to the soundcheck. More Photos Here Two days later I saw them in Chicago. And again in Minneapolis in 2004. And again coming June 21st, 2009, in Minneapolis again! The best band in the world: THE CHURCH
I think The Church has always deserved to be one of the biggest bands in the world. They have a reputation for being "alternative," but their music has always ridden right along with what's hot at that moment. Constant in Opal is the best unknown single of all time, and those guys have never stopped being creative, pushing the envelope and taking guitar to entirely different dimensions.

OK, I could recommend dozens of amazing Church songs, but since Kennedy mentioned "Constant in Opal", here's the video:

Some 80s video cheese, but dig the jangly guitar! Kilbey really is a rock god.
On a side note, funny you mentioned this song, I am a true Church nerd, I own the domain www.constantinopal.com !!! Nothing there yet, any ideas? Some nerd hurdles musical project? I think we have enough musicians here to do something with it!

OK, Mr. Insomniac here couldn't sleep last night, so I ended up watching the entire 5 hours of Sci-Fi's take of Frank Herbert's "Children of Dune" on DVD. For whatever reason, I enjoyed it much more this time around, it really hit the spot.
I'm off to score some spice and have visions of the future...

I can't remember if I watched Children. I watched their Dune and lost me at Duke Leto being played by... William Hurt??? I wasn't taken with their Paul either. Apparently there's a new film in the works. Mediasaurus Rex has the scoop on that. http://www.mediasaurs.com/

Ooo, I'll have to investigate any new movie, thanks. Sci-Fi's versions of Dune and COD are...irritating. For those of you who always wish a movie was closer to the original book, just watch SF's DUNE and you'll be totally bored, it has too much of the book, the story moves along at a snail's pace. With a book, your imagination fills in the blanks; with such a movie, you're just sitting there thinking, "C'mon, get to something different for crying out loud!" And while SF's COD was the same length, it almost had the opposite issues, the "old-fashioned issues", of skipping over too much detail from the books, as it actually combines the 2nd and 3rd Dune books into one long movie.
I own both SF's DUNE and COD, maybe just as a completist attempt. Like most SF Channel shows, there is cheese in the wrong places, bad acting, and I agree, questionable casting choices. But hey, if it helps with insomnia, you gotta give it credit for something.

Cracked the top 25 on the new SS forums. Who'da'thunk it'd take me this long?
Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
Made a "date" with my wife to watch the Star Trek movie this weekend -- dinner and a movie, probably chocolates (definitely popcorn), possibly flowers. We'll be free of (our) kids, though hopefully not free of crowds.
Was there a question on another thread about the potential existence of nerd-girls?
She's more Harry Potter and superheroes, but she sees no hurdle to Star Trek from there.

That sounds more like responsible than nerdy. Good for you! I am irresponsible.
Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
Watched episode 6 of Firefly . I tried to get my Logitech headset to work on skype and audacity at the same time for my guest appearance on a podcast show. I succeeded by setting up a second mic.
This may be nerdy, it also is the only thing I did today. Well , I did read a bit.

Ok, this was yesterday, but I think it still counts. I left work early for a second viewing of Star Trek, then I recorded a podcast about it.

Re: What's the Nerdiest thing you've done today?
Here's a Zen question:
Am I going to see the new Star Trek movie (for the first time) this weekend because
a) I wanted to see it with smaller crowds less likely to be decked out in full regalia,
b) Not a big fan of the new movies coming out this weekend and really want Star Trek to stay #1 another week,
c) Or, it's driving me nuts that I'm still avoiding the new podcasts and forum threads and I'm more than ready to get in?

Totally qualifies, Admiral. Nerd Alert!
GAB, I'd say it's a little bit of A and a lot of C.
