Nerd Rage!
So we have Nerd Pride and we have Nerd Hurdles but i think it could be interesting if people posted thier nerdy pet peeves. Now my intention is to have this be people posting things that the Norms do to annoy Nerds as opposed to Nerd on Nerd hatred but i guess anything goes. Happy ranting!

Re: Nerd Rage!
Good topic.
The one that comes to mind, is here in the office people will say things to me like "Now I'd never watch Star Trek or any sci-fi, but we've been watching Battlestar Gallactica. Isn't that funny? But it's good! Not like sci-fi at all!"
I don't know why they think I'm "too cool" for sci-fi, but it's funny. And offensive.

I thought you didn't watch BSG jake? We should have a Caprica party once we've downloaded. And no i don't feel guilty about stealing TV because Rogers is corrupt and I don't want to pay them 90$ for ghetto vision. Just sayin...

Re: Nerd Rage!
I've yet to see an entire episode of BSG. I'm try to remain unspoilered until I get a chance to actually make it through the episodes. I should really get on top of renting/borrowing the first few seasons.
Re: Nerd Rage!
I've occasionally found whole seasons of TV shows for as low as $10-$15 on Ebay. As with any auction, some work out, some don't. You gotta know how to play the field! Come to think of it, that's a big hurdle for me, idiots who bid too early and only drive up the price of something on Ebay; you can "watch" an item and only bid in the last minute, dumbass! I can't tell you how many guitar necks, DVDs, RAM, etc, I've snuck in and sharked (a new verb!) away from people literally with about 2 seconds to spare!!!!
Yeah! I freekin' RULE on Ebay!!!!!!

We used AuctionSnipe to get our Obama poster. It worked awesomely.

I bought a t-shirt, bumber stickers and buttons from the Obama campaign last year. I sent some of the stickers and buttons to a friend in Brazil; she was quite happy to know she'd supported his campaign, in a roundabout way!

Not everything is a hurdle, some people are just idiots.
I wonder if Auctionsnipe will eventually kill eBay. I guess eBay's kind of dead already.
Re: Nerd Rage!
I'll admit I'm one of those eBay 'idiots'. I don't usually have time to keep an eye on the auction, so I'll just bid as high as I'm willing to go, and if I win it that's great. If not, there are usually 100 more where that one came from.
What really pisses me off on eBay is the idiots who don't bother to research the item they're bidding on, and pay more for a used one than they can get it from Amazon new! That's the stupidity that drives up prices, since sellers know that no matter what they set the start price at, some nimrod will meet it.

Well, that's a good point. We've all done that. Especially for autions that close at 4am.

Oops! Sorry, Admiral! I didn't mean you specifically. In fact, I just took a Star Trek:TNG trivia game off auction and sold it to RoKaren at a discount. As a seller, I'm more interested in "cleaning up my basement", rather than making money. As a buyer, yes, I agree with you about the lack of research about items being bid on. I've seen several hand-held digital recorders lately that people are just getting ripped off by the amount they're going for. As a buyer, the point of Ebay to me is to find something used that I actually want and get it for a fairly decent price. People need to know when to say "when", I guess.

Am I an Ebay nerd? I'd set my alarm clock for 3:45am and stalk that baby...

OK, this line from you and one over at the religion thread, both with the gist being idiocy/unawareness, have really, sincerely, giving me food for thought. I'm thinking....nature=food chain --> human consciousness="food chain" amongst humans --> only one person/archtype gets to be the last-link/top-rung, the rest of us will be caught in the undertow of ecomonic/political/social forces, be it me working at the poverty level in some circuit board manufacturing plant, or a third-world family living on the equilvilant of $200US/year.
No wonder my Hogwarts Sorting Hat score was all out of wack...
Re: Nerd Rage!
No offense taken. The point I was trying to make, somewhat ineffectively, was that to me eBay is, or at least was, a place to find stuff that I wanted, but didn't really need at a decent price. Those days seem to be long gone, however. There was one time, though, that I did fight to the death for an item. It was my Star Trek coffee mug, and I paid about 3 times what I planned, but I won it at the last second, and never regretted it. :-)Jumpsuit wrote:

Re: Nerd Rage!
I agree with jake, it seems like ebay is sort of dead. Alot of the new stuff gets listed over and over again and it's essentially just a store. Even the used stuff if seems like the same seller has an endless supply and just keeps re-listing it. sniping may be evil but sometimes its the only way....short of setting your alarm for 3:45am....

Re: Nerd Rage!
This happened to me once:
Don't call yourself a fan then.
Person I've just met: "[bla bla bla bla bla] and I was watching the latest Harry Potter film yesterday ..."
Me: "You're a Harry Potter fan?"
Person I've just met: "Oh yeah. I love it."
Me: "Wow ... [insert spiel of excitedness here] ... so what's your favourite book?"
Person I've just met: "I don't read the books, I just watch the films."
Me: NERD RAGE.
Don't call yourself a fan then.

Yeah, that's the problem with the Internet, it's too easy to be impersonal and, as I've seen happen occasionally, a jerk. I've certainly shot off a few emails I've regreted, etc. Would you grab some find out from under a grandmother's reaching fingers at a physical garage sale down the street? No! I wouldn't, of course not. Yet on Ebay, you just sit in your room and think, "that thing is going to be mine!"
For what it's worth, I had to set my alarm for 5am today, and it didn't feel good.

I had basically the exact same conversation with one of my friends in art the other day

Re: Nerd Rage!
How about the idea that it's ok to pick on nerds. Nerds are universally picked on regardless of societal circumstances. We're natures punching bags. And sure we've developed thick skin and can have a good laugh at ourselves and our geekery but why did we have to grow such thick skin in the first place? Things don't show any signs of stopping anytime soon even if we are more socially acceptable. Just look at Chuck and Big Bang Theory: nice shows and pretty funny but they would be cancelled in a heartbeat if they actually ran an episode that didn't include some bumbling, awkward, sexually inept situation.

Re: Nerd Rage!
I get pissed off by the fact that whenever there is a mention of The Wire I am bound to hear the following dialogue:
'Have you watched it?'
'Well, I tried but the accents were so thick and there was too much street jargon'
'Yeah, its like that, watch the first three episodes and then you'll be hooked'
'I don't know if I want to invest that much time and money into getting all the DVDs'
'Well, I've got all the boxsets, I'll lend them to you. It really subverts the stereotypes you know.'
Every time. Every fucking time. I'll be on the train coming home and two people will start talking about it. I'll be in Tescos and people will be having that conversation. Its good that people are getting into the show, but for fucks sake!

Re: Nerd Rage!
My nerd rage usually centers around music. Usually from a snobby musicological standpoint. Someone might say to me something like: "I used to be into punk. Yeah, I loved Blondie. And Billy Idol, you know he used to be in The Clash, right?"
In these cases I often find my hands clenched in white-knuckled fists. Music is where my true nerdiness comes out. I can't help it.

Re: Nerd Rage!
Ah, but you're aware of your level of musical trivia knowledge. I talking about people (and by "people" I mean scenester douchebags) who try to make themselves seem "hip" by name dropping sub-genres and quazi-obscure artists, usually incorrectly.

I hate those people too
I don't suppose you've heard the new Colin and they angry Ducks, album. They're like the biggest thing right now in post folk-acid punk-deathcore-rap
